New Digital Media Essay

The development of new/digital media means the audience is more powerful in terms of consumptions and production. Discuss the arguments for and against the view.

The development of new digital media has made a huge impact around the world, the development of NDM can be argued that it gives the audience more power because they are able to do whatever they want. New digital media allows audiences to produce and create anything appropriate. It allows you can access the web in many new and different styles such as, Smart phones, iPods, tablets etc. The development of NDM has allowed the audience to be able to interact with the use of their creations meaning they are allowed to show their views and opinions about certain topics and dilemmas, especially the news certain news topics on websites such as the guardian.

Pluralists believe and argue that the audience are in control of new digital media. They believe that everyone has a freedom of speech and that we have the freedom to as we want and they also agree in democracy. Pluralists have the ability to manipulate the media and change the opinion of other audiences from what they say and do as the audience have the ability to conform, accommodate or reject. Also the use of citizen journalism creates reliable and real news blogs. It is shown that the media seek greater audience because of the profit motive; this point shows that the media needs the audience to benefit the media financially. The Catells theory (1996) links to the pluralist’s point of view, theory believes in the “technological blossoming of the culture of freedom with individual annotation and entrepreneurialism”.

An example for my points would the riots occurring in Egypt Lybia and Tunisia; Riots in Lybia occurred because a mobile phone, when the police abused a citizen because he had a political problem and he wanted to talk to the president. Unfortunately the police retaliated violently by slapping and spitting in the citizens face, this made him furious with the situation and created and unthinkable protest by burning himself alive; This crazy protest spread all across the Arab new informing everyone. Many citizens of Lybia were shocked from seeing this from the streets and agreed with the mans point and started a peaceful protest and ended up in disaster when the police came with the riot team and replied violently against the citizens, many people were injured in the process. Smartly two men were able to make a video of the dilemma with the riot police and put it on social networking sights such as facebook, the video went viral and spread all over the interent this caused the Arab spring protest. On the other hand Control of the media is said to be in the hands of an elite who allow a considerable degree of flexibility in production choices

However a marxist’s perspective would argue that the so called “information revelution” has done little to benefit audiences change the power structures in society. This is because Marxist believe a hierarchical structure that control the media, this means that the audience have no choice or freedom when it comes to searching the web, advertising and social norms are created by the elites and this forms hegemony over the public, what we believe is normal is not us being individualistic but us being ‘brainwashed’ from a young age. For example Rupert Murdoch company new corp allows him to create hegemonic ideas across the globe because he owns such a substantial part of the media.

To my conclusion this essay has shown that Pluralist believe strongly that media content is focused by the audience and not by dominant ideology. Due to the fact that the audience are able to create news with the use of smart phones and tablets this make it easier for the audience to leave opinions and post their own news, the rise of the UGC has empowered the audience in terms of production and consumption. However Marxists believe that even though Pluralists believe that the audience have more power, they actually don’t. This is because of the hegemony leaders from the ruling class controlling the media and our brains,  this usually happens from a young age from viewing and accessing things such as T.V programmes or old social networking sights such as Bebo.

‘World’s cheapest tablet’ lands in the UK for just £30

Datawind UbiSlate 7Ci tablet

A tablet computer originally made for an educational scheme run by the Indian government has launched in the UK for only £30.
Starting at £29.99 the self-proclaimed “world’s cheapest tablet” theUbiSlate 7Ci significantly undercuts the competition on price including the£119 Tesco Hudl, £80 Aldi Lifetab and the £200 Google Nexus 7, but does not compare favourably on specifications.
The UbiSlate features a low-resolution 7in touchscreen, 1GHz processor, 4GB of storage with a microSD card slot, and runs a modified version of Android 4.0.3 “Ice Cream Sandwich”. It comes bundled with a series of apps for education, entertainment, gaming and productivity, aiming to bring computer and internet access to everyone.#
I believe the audience will love this a lot due to that fact of the price. I think many people will buy these 30 pound tablets, demographically the groups of D/E will be very fond of the price. This will increase the rate of social networking sights, and this will benefit the Indian government financially

iPhone 5S makes rapid start in China and hits 10% of iPhones in use, data shows

iPhone 5S: has sold strongly in China

Apple's iPhone 5S has been a dramatic hit in China, comprising 12% of sales there during October, says market research company Counterpoint.
The result comes even before its deal with China Mobile, the world's largest carrier, which is expected to begin taking preorders for the phone on Thursday 12 December ahead of an official announcement of a 4G network next week.
The sales boost in China propelled the 5S, the top-end iPhone which has a built-in fingerprint reader, to be the best-selling phone worldwide during October, according to Counterpoint.
It also comes as separate data from analytics company Mixpanel suggests that the 5S now makes up 10% of all iPhones in use, and that the radically redesigned iOS 7 operating system has achieved a faster takeup than last year's release of iOS 6.

This will benifit apples company more due to the fact that China are loving the new iphone 5s, it has become really popular within the country, this will boost apple financially

Samsung ordered to pay Apple $290m more for US patent infringements

Samsung

A California jury ruled Thursday that electronics giant Samsung owes rival Apple another $290m for infringing the iPhone and iPad maker’s patents.
The retrial verdict came after judge Lucy Koh vacated over $400m of the original $1bn damages the jury awarded Apple in March, saying the jurors had miscalculated. The new jury sided heavily with Apple, which argued it was owed another $379m. Samsung argued it owed just $52m and that Apple had inflated the worth of its patents.
Barring a successful appeal, the Korean maker of Galaxy smartphones and tablets owes more than $800m in damages, including the award from the original verdict as well.

i think samsung were trying to be like apple so they can have the same type of success, also i believe that samsung wanted to make more profit by making the phone cheaper than the actual iphone. TYhis didnt really affect the audience as much as the company because they will still use the samsung andriod phone weather they are in trouble or not. I think samsung acted stupidly about the situation and should have shown some originality when they were making the new designed phones.

Xbox One and Microsoft websites marred by problems on launch day

Emanuel Jumatate hugs his new Xbox One

Microsoft's Xbox One launch was marred by problems with its online services early on Friday which took down the official website Xbox.com, as well as microsoft.com and Office 365, Microsoft's cloud-based software service. Users were shown error messages referencing a DNS failure.A spokesman said services are now fully restored and said it would update customers once the cause was found, though previously component failure and a certification issue have caused outages for Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform.

From reading this article it shows that all xbox console players will have a negative opinion on this subject, because many people are addicted to these type of consoles. A lot of youngsters will be disappointed with the result of this outcome because many fans were waiting for the release of this game for many months. Many people pre ordered the console due to the excitement of the early release so you can tell there were negative opinions about the error

PS4 sells 1m in US, despite mixed reviews and technical issues

PS4: Joey Chiu is the first to buy Sony's next-gen console at the Standard High Line in New York

The next generation of video game consoles has got off to a seemingly rousing start. Sony claimed on Sunday that it had sold 1 million PlayStation 4's after the machine's North American launch on 15 November – an achievement largely predicted by strong global pre-order figures. The consumer electronics giant is expecting to sell 5 million units worldwide by 31 March 2014. Media analysis firm IHS predicts sales of 2.4m by 31 December.

The figure makes this one of the most successful console launch periods in the modern era. Nintendo's Wii, the biggest selling machine of the previous generation, took eight days to sell 600,000 units in the US.

I believe that the Playstation4 is going to be a huge success because there are thousands of people who are big fans of Playstation globally. The fact that they have improved most of the technical a graphical features will make all  Playstation gamers excited and and eager to purchase it. The Playstaion4 is literally the best console out right now so there will be a lot of sales even though there were some  slight technical issues.

Football Manager 2013 was illegally downloaded 10.1m times

Football Manager 13

British games developer Sports Interactive claims its Football Manager 2013 game was downloaded illegally 10.1m times after being "cracked" in May.
The game, which was released in November 2012, included a feature that saw cracked copies "call home" when played, providing SI with data on where and how often it was being used.
i believe that this will make the company who creates this game lose a lot of money for illegal downloads, its important that the company gets to the bottom of this situation before it gets even worse than what it already is. This game is known worlds wide so a lot of people who enjoy playing the game will also attempt to download football manager illegally

In China there was a lot of conflict shown between iphones and adroids, Many of the Chinese citizens prefer using andriods phones because its cheaper and you can access iphone apps. Many Chinese people have been using andriod phones due to the lack of money , mant chinese citizens believe that this could possible affect apple financially due to the fact that China is one of the main places where iphones are popular so this could be a problem

NDM: UsvsTh3m

UsvsTh3m, the Daily Mirror publisher's Buzzfeed-style social content offering, is expected to reach 3 million unique users in October, thanks largely to interactive quiz "How much are you hated by the Daily Mail?"

Why this website is a good idea for newspapers in the digital age ?...

Many users are encouraged to share their scores on social networking sights such as twitter, facebook and instragram ect. This will make other types of audience that are involved in the new digital interested in trying out the quiz, helping to drive up traffic. Almost a third of that traffic, 1.25million users came from people playing and sharing the tounge-in-cheek daily mail quiz.

iPhone 5C: why the naysayers are wrong to say Apple is in trouble...

"The doom mongers misunderstand the nature of Apple's market share when they claim the recent high-cost iPhone launches showed an error of judgement"

This article is about the new iphone 5C , it is one of the newest iphones out right now it got released the the same time as the iphone 5S , the difference between these two iphones is that the 5C is plastic and the but it uses the same software as the 5S. Many people believe that apple are in trouble due to the fact that they are making the 5C cheeper than the 5S, this attracts more customers because the iphone 5C is £100 cheeper; many customers would see this as saving money.

I believe that apple are not in trouble because i think they are trying to think of new ideas and designs for apple, to show unique skill and individuality within the company .

                                                                 GTA 5

A screenshot from GTA 5

The GTA series certainly isn't female-friendly. Loved by teenagers, it has become one itself: yet in the 16 years of its existence, it hasn't once offered players the chance to experience its sprawling scenery and high-octane thrills as a female character. In the latest instalment, released last week, women are once again pushed to the margins.
You can rescue one whose car has broken down, spy on another having sex with her boyfriend while she checks her phone, and, of course, visit the obligatory strip club and "make it rain" bank notes. There aren't any female characters to root for, be impressed by, or even fall in love with. It was the same in the last game: women were there to nag you, or be bribed – whether with fancy dinners or cold, hard cash – into having sex with you. Women are GTA's wallpaper.
Target Audience
The target audience for this story will be young adults and teens, also i believe this story will attract both sides of gender because its talking about how females are being represented within a male dominated video game. if we were talking demographically then the target audience would be the groups D/E.
The Impact
I believe that this story has a big impact because the game is so well known around the world and its one the most popular games created so many people might not like the new image of gta. This game creates a huge impact because it involves more of a male dominated story line and women are looked down upon even more in GTA5

Autumn brings a chill for BlackBerry

Bleak results, rushed out early, and another huge round of layoffs signal that the mobile pioneer's time is running out

With the fall of Nokia looming over him, this weekend will be an uncomfortable one for Thorsten Heins, chief executive of BlackBerry. While the Finnish firm sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft for €5.4bn (£4.5bn) this month, questions are swirling as to how long BlackBerry – which signalled its distress in August by putting itself up for sale – can survive, and in what form.
This weekend was meant to be a new start for the company, with an attempt to turn back the clock to when it was the star of the tech world by offering its famous BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) software free for iPhones and Android phones. But rivals such as WhatsApp are already on both, with more users, while BlackBerry's base is dwindling both among consumers and businesses. BBM's arrival on the other platforms is two years too late, says the insider.

The Rise and Rise of UGC

What is ment by the term 'citizen journalism' ?

citizen journalism is when private individuals do essentially what professional reporters do - report information. That information can take many forms, from a podcast editorial to a report about a city council meeting on a blog. It can include text, pictures, audio and video. But it's basically all about communicating information of some kind.
http://journalism.about.com/od/citizenjournalism/a/whatiscitizen.htm
What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ordinary people ?

One of the first examples of news being generated by ordinary people was the Rodney King story, Rodney Glen King was an African-American construction worker who, while on parole for robbery, became nationally known after being beaten by Los Angeles police officers following a high-speed car chase on March 3, 1991. George Holliday, a resident in the nearby area, witnessed the beating and videotaped much of it from the balcony of his nearby apartment.

List some of the formats for the participation that are now offered by news organisations

  • Message Boards
  • Chat rooms
  • Q&A

What is a Gatekeeper?

The organisation which decides the types of text that is/is not news and whether it will broadcast the content provided by the Citizen journalists.

How has the role of a gatekeeper changed

A gatekeepers job role has become more important due to it having small access in the past because it used to do self representations with low income groups and youth groups. However it has now gained its own voice through the use of citizen journalism

We have abandoned our children to the internet
InRealLife Beeban Kidron
Story
A year ago I walked into my kitchen to find half a dozen teenagers there, each one engrossed with their own private screen in silence. I realised it had been months since I'd seen a teenager without a computer or smartphone in their hand. I decided there and then to make a film on the subject, the beginning of a year-long journey that took me from the fibre-optic cables in the sewers of London to spending endless, unedifying hours in bedrooms of teenage boys as they watched porn.

i personally agree with this with this article becasue so many teenagers cant live without their phones and also even adults cant go a day without using electronic devices. Many people have become attatched to these devices that they depend of them.
